Clothe Yourselves in Christ

October 11, 2008

Saturday of the Twenty-seventh Week in Ordinary Time

For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:27-28

Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it. Luke 11:28

Piety

Father, open our ears to hear your Word. Jesus, open our minds to understand Word-made flesh. Holy Spirit, clothed us in Christ so we can go out into the world and profess the Good News. Amen.

Study

Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.

The Good News according to St. Luke is the third and the longest of the canonical Gospels in the New Testament. It is comprised of 24 chapters containing 24,618 words. Yet the theme in chapter-after-chapter can be summed up in these twelve words.

Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.

In the very outset, we witness Zechariah hearing the word of God through his encounter with the angel. Then Mary accepts God’s word and her role as handmaiden to the Lord.

Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.

Through the end of this book, in Luke’s account of the resurrection, the disciples see the tomb is empty. Here they encounter messengers from the Lord just as Zechariah and Mary did at the beginning. “And they remembered his words.”

Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.

The summary act of this Gospel before the Ascension was Jesus opening the minds of his disciples so that they would understand the scriptures. “And (behold) I am sending the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” Luke 24:49
