What I Do For God

November 4, 2007

Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

By Rev. Joe McCloskey, S.J.

Indeed, before you the whole universe is as a grain from a balance, or a drop of morning dew come down upon the earth. But you have mercy on all, because you can do all things; and you overlook the sins of men that they may repent. Wisdom 11:22-23

And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost." Luke 19:9-10

Piety

Lord Jesus Christ, you can do all things including overlook the sins we commit everyday. Through your divine mercy, make us worthy of your calling, able to hear it and respond in faith, hope and charity to you and to our sisters and brothers. Amen.

God’s mercy comes to us without our deserving it. We are all sinners because of our disobedience. God loves us because of his Son’s dying for us. What we do by showing mercy to one another is open wide the doors of God’s mercy for us in Christ who has died for us. The embrace from the cross of Christ is forever waiting for us to come to him with our needs. His love can cover all our mistakes. He is willing to take the blame for all the evil we have done in our lives if we are willing to ask. He does not force his love upon us. So we are his when we ask.

When we ask, Christ takes over. God sees his Son in what we have asked forgiveness for. So Christ is our forgiveness.

Jesus cam to seek and to save what was lost. Zacchaeus climbed a sycamore tree when Jesus was passing by so that he could see Jesus. When Jesus looked up and saw what he had done, he called him to come down as he invited himself to stay at his house. Zacchaeus knew what people thought of him as a tax collector and told the Lord he would repay anyone he had extorted anything from four times over. Jesus was impressed by his willingness to make up for any wrong he had done and saw in Zacchaeus all of us sinners he was willing to forgive if we would but ask. Every time one hears this story, the question is asked in our hearts just how much we are willing to be fools for the sake of Christ.

Action

How high would I climb for the chance to see Christ more clearly?

The value of everything I have is like a drop of morning dew when I compare it to knowing our Lord Jesus Christ. All of our creation exists because of the love of our Lord. There is incredible beauty that surrounds us that we rarely bother to take in with even a glance. God spares everything because it is his. It is for this reason that God would rebuke us; that we might return to his love is the why of all suffering in our lives. God makes us worthy of his calling and bring to fulfillment every good purpose we have in our life. The good we do in life is glorified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. There is never any good we would do for one another that is wasted because God sees it and counts it to our good in heaven even when no one notices it here on earth. For this reason it is right that we all pray for each other that we might be worthy of the calling of God with our grace in the Lord Jesus Christ.
