The Solemnity of
the Most Holy Trinity 2013
By Rev. Joe McCloskey, SJ
"When the Lord established the heavens I was there, when
he marked out the vault over the face of the deep; when he made firm the skies
above, when he fixed fast the foundations of the earth; when he set for the sea
its limit, so that the waters should not transgress his command; then was I
beside him as his craftsman, and I was his delight day by day, playing before
him all the while, playing on the surface of his earth; and I found delight in
the human race." Proverbs 8:27-31
Jesus said to his disciples: "I have much more to tell
you, but you cannot bear it now. But
when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will
speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. John 16:12-13
Piety
God reveals
himself to us as Trinity. We know a
little bit about everyone by what we see in their deeds, good and bad. We know a lot about God because God has revealed
himself in the goodness of creation and best of all in in Christ. Jesus says it loud and clear when he says he
who knows me knows the Father. Christ
reveals the Spirit to us when he says he has to go so the Father and he can
send the Spirit. The Trinity is the
action of God within us. We are Temples
of the Holy Spirit. We have been
baptized into the life of the Trinity. Baptism
is done in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We are baptized into the possession of the
Trinity by the three pours of water over us.
One pour is done in the name of the Father, another of the Son and the
third of the Holy Spirit. Thus we
possess the life of the Trinity in us and we bring the life of the Spirit into
play in all the good things we do in the name of Christ. We are created by the Father in Christ and we
live in the life of the Spirit.
Study
We study how God
has revealed himself to us through the Patriarchs and the Prophets. But it is in the fullness of time that God
reveals himself to us in Christ. Christ
in his humanness is the fullness of the expression of the mystery of God. We look at Christ and study his life that we
can become like him in the way we live our lives. Spirituality is putting on the mind and the
heart of Christ. The Saint is one who
takes the example of Christ and gives it life in his or her age. Saints are modern day transparencies of
Christ. They give expression to the love
of God. They do in their day and age
what Christ would have done.
Action
The life of the
family is the best human expression of the mystery of Trinity. We see the perfect giving and the perfect
receiving living as the mystery of the Spirit in us. Family is where perfect giving and receiving
meet as parents co-creating with God the life of the child. Love gives Christ life to the Family.
