Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary
Time
"Let whoever is simple turn in here;
To the one who lacks understanding, she says, Come, eat of my food,
and drink of the wine I have mixed! Forsake foolishness that you may
live; advance in the way of understanding." Proverbs 9:4-6
Brothers and sisters: Watch carefully
how you live, not as foolish persons but as wise, making the most
of the opportunity, because the days are evil.
Therefore, do not continue in ignorance, but try to
understand what is the will of the Lord. Ephesians 5:15
Piety
Jesus said to the crowds:
"I am the living bread that came down from heaven;
whoever eats this bread will live forever;
and the bread that I will give
is my flesh for the life of the world." John 6:51
"I am the living bread that came down from heaven;
whoever eats this bread will live forever;
and the bread that I will give
is my flesh for the life of the world." John 6:51
Study
When I open the readings for today, I am told that this is the
Twentieth Sunday in ordinary time. Let us pray that this past week is not what
we can come to expect of “ordinary.” St.
Paul had it very right when he wrote two thousand years ago that the “days are
evil.”
The First Reading today invites us to the feast. The Second Reading
tells us how to get ready for the feast and how to live afterward. The Gospel tells us what’s on the menu. God
shows us incredible generosity by His invitation.
Action
Jesus wants a true
friendship with those who not only eat the bread on Sunday but also who live
out the moral code that St. Paul sent to the people of Ephesus and Fairfax.
How will you live out your relationship with Jesus
through your charity?
