What God
Promised
Piety
“We ourselves are proclaiming this good news
to you that what God promised our fathers he has brought to fulfillment for us,
their children, by raising up Jesus, as it is written in the second psalm, you
are my Son; this day I have begotten you." Acts 13:32-33
“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I
will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may
be. Where I am going you know the way." John 14:3-4
Study
Continuity.
Jesus
was certainly a disrupter of the status quo in his preaching, healing, and
mission. However, he also was a mentor,
promising to be there for his disciples.
As challenging as was his message, he also promised support, continuity,
and assurance – kind of like the Ultimate Palanca.
The
Lord provided ample (although puzzling) fore-warning about his fate on the cross…but
he also vowed to return and lead people to the New Promised Land. Such leadership is something reassured the Jews. They had other such leaders before in Moses
and Elijah. The Good Shepherd came out
of that same mold.
Peter
and Paul also then provided that same continuity. As Paul stands up to address the synagogue in
Antioch, he addresses the assembly and leads them from salvation history (with
which they were familiar) to salvation destiny (with which they are experiencing
anew).
Action
Where
are you most challenged today? Where do
you need the most reassurance?
