But now it has been manifested to his holy ones, to whom God chose
to make known the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; it is
Christ in you, the hope for glory. It is he whom we proclaim, admonishing
everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone
perfect in Christ. For this I labor and struggle, in accord with the exercise
of his power working within me. Colossians 1:26B-29
But he realized their intentions and said to the man with the
withered hand, "Come up and stand before us." And he rose and stood
there. Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the
Sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?" Looking
around at them all, he then said to him, "Stretch out your hand." He
did so and his hand was restored. Luke 6:8-10
Piety
Turning your ear to wisdom, inclining your heart to understanding; Yes,
if you call for intelligence, and to understanding raise your voice; If you
seek her like silver, and like hidden treasures search her out, Then will you
understand the fear of the LORD; the knowledge of God you will find; For the
LORD gives wisdom, from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. (Proverbs
2:2-6)
Study
Paul speaks often of the struggle of faith as he seeks perfection and
wisdom. He tries to recognize “Christ in
you” whether he is addressing the Corinthians, Colossians, Ephesians, Romans or
the Hebrews.
Jesus knew the struggle because he was often trying to dodge the traps
being set for him by the Pharisees (as in today’s challenge in the temple).
The bigger part of the struggle is to gain an understanding of what God
wants us to do with the talents we are given. Today, Jesus wants us to balance
the need to save life rather than to sit idly by and do nothing in the face of
suffering. He used his skills in preaching to ”teach everyone with all
wisdom.”
Action
The world as created by God is abundant, with enough for everyone provided that human communities restrain their appetites and live within appropriate limits. Disparities in wealth and power are not, in fact, part of the natural order.
Following a
natural disaster like Hurricane Dorian is a time when we can be most attuned to
sharing our resources with those people who are trying to rebuild their lives,
homes and business whether they are in the Bahamas or Brunswick Country, North
Carolina.
Right now, money is what is needed most. Here
are some of the organizations who are helping the victims. Consider how you can support one of these or
others that you learn about.
Also, when storms come through areas where blood drives are scheduled,
those drives get canceled, so needs go unanswered. Are you able to give blood
to replenish the supplies needed?
