"Unless
Your Faith Is Firm" by Melanie Rigney
God upholds his city forever. (Psalm
48:9d)
Jesus began to reproach the towns where most of his mighty
deeds had been done since they had not repented. “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to
you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in
Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes.” (Matthew 11:20-21)
Piety
God, strengthen my spirit so that I
may stand firm even when I can’t see You.
Study
“Don’t worry! God’s got this
covered!” a dear friend of mine often says. What’s more, I can tell she means
it.
How do we get it, though, that
firmness, in a time when it’s difficult to live our faith in community as we
thought of community even six months ago? How do we get it, though, in a time
when for many of us, going to Mass in person isn’t advisable? How do we get it,
though, in a time when so on and so on and so on and so on.
I suspect people have asked that
throughout the ages, through plagues and viruses, world wars and civil wars, peace
and prosperity. And I suspect that the answer is found in the way my friend
lives it: She has total faith that regardless of what’s going on in her life
personally or professionally, the Lord, not she and certainly not those who try
to bedevil her, are in control.
We find it in prayer. We find it in
study. We find it in that social media post of our friend, who, with his wife,
is raising a four-year-old granddaughter because their son was taken too soon.
We find it in the confidence exhibited by a friend who started her own virtual
spiritual coaching business amid a pandemic.
You see, firm faith is everywhere.
All we have to do is surrender those fears and doubts and learn from those who
show firm faith every single day.
Action
Cede control.
