“Where Are You?” By Melanie Rigney

“Where Are You?” By Melanie Rigney

Saturday of the Fifth Week in Ordinary Time

The LORD God called to Adam and asked him, “Where are you?” He answered, “I heard you in the garden, but I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid myself.” (Genesis 3:9-10)

In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge. (Psalm 90:1)

He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then, taking the seven loaves, he gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to his disciples to distribute, and they distributed them to the crowd. They also had a few fish. He said the blessing over them and ordered them distributed also. They ate and were satisfied. (Mark 8:6-8)

Piety

Lord, let my thoughts and actions always honor Your presence with me and in me.

Study

God knew where Adam was, of course. God knows everything. God also knew about the last thing Adam wanted to do was converse with God, but there it was.

There is no escape.

Oh, we can ignore God. That will grieve God, but God still never goes away. God’s patient. God waits. But God never goes away. Adam learned that. Adam also understood that avoiding God, loving as God is, has consequences. Lame excuses won’t change that.

Yes, God is our refuge. Yes, God can be ignored and avoided. But make no mistake. Whether you truly believe in God’s presence or in your soul of souls, doubt that presence makes no difference.

There is no escape—only sweet surrender.

Action

Surrender your pride, your arrogance, your timidity, your avarice, your whatever, today. Accept the consequence, knowing God will be far more merciful than you would be.
