“Connection, Connection, Connection” by Sam Miller

“Taking the book of the covenant, he [Moses] read it aloud to the people, who answered, "All that the LORD has said, we will heed and do."  Then he took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, saying, "This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words of His." Exodus 24:7-8

“For this reason, He is mediator of a new covenant: since a death has taken place for deliverance from transgressions under the first covenant, those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance.” Hebrews 9:15

“While they were eating, He took bread, said the blessing, broke it, gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is my body."  Then He took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it.  He said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many.” Mark 14:22-24

Piety
“Blood is poured and flesh is broken,
Yet in either wondrous token
Christ entire we know to be…
When the sacrament is broken,
Doubt not, but believe ‘tis spoken,
That each sever’d outward token
doth the very whole contain.

Nought the precious gift divides,
Breaking but the sign betides
Jesus still the same abides,
still unbroken does remain.”  (from Sequence - Lauda Sion)

Study
This day and age, it seems that everyone’s more connected to their mobile devices than to each other.  More than once, I have tried responding to people talking out loud, asking, “Are you speaking to me?” only to discover they were wearing some sort of ear appliance on the other side of their head and I’d interrupted them by asking the question.  Stranger than fiction, that got me to thinking about God trying to get His children’s attention, to have the Father-child relationship, the family tie that binds!

When God made a covenant with Abraham, “ The LORD said to Abram: Know for certain that your descendants will reside as aliens in a land not their own, where they shall be enslaved and oppressed for four hundred years." Does Egypt ring a bell!?  Moses read to the people from the book of the covenant and they responded, “All that the LORD has said, we will heed and do.", then the people were sprinkled with the blood of the covenant that the Lord had made with them, to which they had pledged their fidelity.

AND, then comes the golden calf incident!!, really??!

So, after God gave the people judges and prophets ‘cause they needed them to tell and show the way, they asked for kings so they could be like other nations and God granted their request ‘cause they promised they knew what they were asking, and they’d obey and behave.  (Can you hear the “We promise, ya just gotta believe us!)  Because of God’s great love for His children, He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, to fulfill the promises of the Old Testament, wipe away sins of the past and sacrifice His very self, His body as bread, the cup as His blood of the perfect and everlasting covenant which ONLY He could bring about unto eternity.  Christ, our Eucharist, taken, broken for all to share, never diminished!

Action
I’m going to try putting into practice the expression “God gave us two ears and one mouth so that we would listen twice as much as we speak” by listening twice as hard to hear God’s call to me and preface all my promises with “If it be Your will, Lord.”
