Second Sunday of Advent
By Rev. Joe McCloskey, S.J.
Piety
Lord, you have indeed done great things for us. You gave us life yet we sinned. You died for our sins. You conquered death. Lift us up from the despair we face in life – illness and physical death, poverty and hunger, war and hatred. Come into our lives this season of preparation so that we can come back rejoicing in the harvest of your love. Amen.
Study
Preparation differs according to the importance given the event. Sending another to prepare the way gives special importance to the one coming. The importance of Christ coming into the world at Christmas is hard to completely realize. His coming in the eyes of children is more important than his going. Children respond to the birth of another child. Getting ready for a birth in a family has a way of dwarfing all else that is happening. We all need to be like John who prepares the way for the coming of Christ. We are all called by Christ to point him out to those we love. Even as I hold back on eating before the Thanksgiving turkey to better enjoy the meal, I am careful in what I do before Christmas. The little child prepares for Christmas by being good and we adults prepare by saving up for the gifts we would give.
Action
This Advent Sunday could be called the “Prepare the Way of the Lord Sunday.” How am I going to prepare?
